Any patient undergoing gall bladder removal operation has a doubt that whether the surgery will have any impact on digestion or not. Gall bladder removal operation is done for diseased gall bladder and does not have any problem with digestion of normal food. Even after gall bladder removal operation patient can have normal food and can digest the fatty foods also. There are some compensatory mechanisms by the body after gall bladder removal operation. The gall bladder is extrahepatic storage organ for bile which stores about 30 to 60 ml of bile at a time.
Normal size of the common bile duct is about 4 to 6 mm. After gall bladder removal operation, the size of the bile duct increases to about 10mm within a year. This dilated bile duct act as extrahepatic bile storing organ. Also, the release of hormone cholecystokinin from the small intestine causes the relaxation of sphincter Oddi after food. This causes the release of bile into the duodenum so that regulates the digestion.
There is no restriction of food habits following gall bladder surgery. The restriction of food habit is required as per the existing co-morbid conditions like diabetes mellitus, blood pressure, cardiac problem or any other systemic illness.
